Went to a pals birthday party last night, actually he is a student of mine but as happens with most of the great guys who come through the doors here we end up being friends and get invited out a lot. It was a very good night, I was on my best behavior as i was driving and had Max with me so had a couple of coke lights and a sparkling mineral water!! Most of the students from the academy where there which was nice and i got the usual jibes about not drinking and the odd really nice comments about how the guys are really enjoying the training and how much better they feel.
Then you get the NON believers!! the ones you don't know but they have heard about the training and how the current members rave over the atmosphere and introduce themselves by saying "you must be the MASTER??" with a wry smile, as they turn to the next guy! and you try your best to be polite, remembering you have been invited by this guys or girls friend!! However most people who know me will know that holding my tongue is not really my best attribute (Im not sure if i have any!)so when the return answer is that I detest the word MASTER or Guru (and smart *****)the wry smile tends to change to that look of embarrassment!! I think they must have seen Karate Kid too many times and half expect me to agree and just laugh it off and bow or something!!! NOT A CHANCE!!
When i hear someone profess themselves as a MASTER or EXPERT or GURU it makes my blood boil! why on earth cant they get over the fact that we just offer a service and the most important person is the student not them!! don't get me wrong it is lovely to be told that you are doing a good job and people like what you do and the way you do it but why should it go to your head, I still think of my self as a student, but i genuinely believe that the most important person on the mat is the guy who has paid to train with me!
